Circulation Clerk (Full-time)

Circulation Clerk

Full-time (40 hours/week) position with paid vacation, sick time, holidays, and excellent benefits. Circulation Clerks are responsible for a range of services including, but not limited to, checking materials in and out, maintaining the patron database, monitoring patron behavior, and acting as the initial point of contact for customer service for the library.

Required Abilities and Knowledge

Circulation Clerks must be able to:

  • interact with people from all walks of life
  • provide friendly and efficient service
  • listen to and communicate with patrons and staff in a courteous, friendly, service-oriented manner
  • assist patrons in locating materials
  • notify patrons of overdues and fines
  • assist patrons in operating the public copiers
  • address patrons’ suggestions, complaints and inappropriate behavior and notify ranking staff as needed
  • efficiently and appropriately handle conflict
  • effectively explain Circulation policies to patrons
  • multitask
  • have sufficient time management in task completion
  • be punctual
  • read, write, and speak English clearly
  • work all hours the library is open
  • use an automated circulation system
  • register and update patron records
  • maintain confidentiality of patron records
  • place items on hold for patrons
  • send and receive faxes
  • check for overdues and claims returned items
  • fill out patron request, damaged materials and claims returned cards
  • efficiently process library materials for return or check-out
  • use repetitive motions for the check-in/check-out process
  • bend at the waist to lift up to 15 lbs
  • stoop to empty book drops as needed
  • work the Circulation desk, and other required public service desks, alone as needed
  • assist other departments during staff shortages
  • use a cash register and apply basic arithmetic
  • accurately and efficiently close out the register at the end of the night
  • assist in cleaning materials as required by the Circulation Supervisor and Supervisor’s Assistant
  • assist with special displays of materials, promotional materials, and other general interest topics
  • minor troubleshooting of equipment
  • perform support activities necessary for the smooth operation of the department
  • accept additional responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor and Supervisor’s Assistant
  • effectively work as a member of a team to accomplish the department’s and library’s goals and objectives
  • attend library meetings and in-service training programs
  • participate in the library’s communication system
  • accept and adapt to new ideas, concepts and policies
  • all other tasks assigned and required by the Supervisor

Circulation Clerks must have knowledge of:

  • Library policies and procedures
  • Material Safety Data Sheets
  • Good customer service
  • Telephone etiquette
  • Dewey Decimal System

Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Experience and Knowledge:

  • Popular literature, films and music
  • Use of automated circulation system
  • Retail/sales
  • Library work
