Happy Independence Day! The library will be closed on Monday, July 4, for Independence Day.

On Tuesday, July 5, the library will begin a project to replace all the
overhead lighting in the building, changing them to LED fixtures. The library will remain open during all phases of the project but reserves the right to close, if necessary.

MICHIGAN CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY LIGHTING REPLACEMENT PROJECT                 

On Tuesday, July 5, 2022, the library will begin a project to replace all the overhead lighting in the building, changing them to LED fixtures. The new fixtures will feature automatic ambient lighting, centralized controls for turning on and off, and conservation of lighting in unoccupied public areas. A section above the front entrance will have specialized color lighting for seasonal themes. The expected completion date is September 16, 2022. The library will remain open during all phases of the project but reserves the right to close, if necessary.
During the project, areas under the work zone will be closed. The library will make every effort to minimize the closure time to its collections and services in any given area as work proceeds. The meeting rooms will be closed while work is done in them. Please see the library’s website and social media for updates.
This project is a continuation of the remodeling program that started in 2016. The new fixtures will be both energy efficient and aesthetically complimentary to the building while providing warmer lighting for users.

The Summer Reading Program is for all ages and 100% free to participate! For every 10 hours you read, read to someone else, or listen to someone read, you’ll receive a chance in the raffle. Record your time and select a raffle prize you would like to have a chance to win. You also receive a book of your choice!

The last day to record your reading hours and enter the prize raffle is Saturday, July 30. The raffle drawing will be held following the end of the program. Winners will be notified by a phone call.

Signing up is easy! Download a reading log and keep track of your reading hours at home. There are also reading logs available in Youth Services that you may take home.

Click here to record your hours and enter the raffle or call Youth Services at 219-873-3045. After every 10 hours of reading, you’ll receive another entry for the raffle, so make sure you select which prize you would like to try to win.

For every ten (10) hours that you read, are read to, or read to someone else, you’ll receive a chance in the raffle for an amazing prize, like a Kindle Fire, Roblox, Roku, karaoke machine, and more! Weekly Family Movies and a Craft

Join us every week for a family movie and craft project. Movies begin at 10:00 am on Thursdays. Arrive by 10:15 am and have a chance to win the DVD (for kids 17 years and younger). Refreshments served.

Join us for a showing of Finding Nemo and a related craft. Nemo, an adventurous young clownfish, is unexpectedly taken from his Great Barrier Reef home to a dentist’s office aquarium. It’s up to his worrisome father Marlin and his friendly but forgetful regal blue tang fish Dory to bring Nemo home — meeting vegetarian sharks, surfer dude turtles, hypnotic jellyfish, hungry seagulls, and more along the way.

Finding Nemo

Join us for a showing of Finding Dory and a related craft. Finding Dory reunites the friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish with her loved ones, and everyone learns a few things about the true meaning of family along the way.

Finding Dory

Join us for a showing of Shark Tale and a related craft. Oscar, a lowly tongue-scrubber at the local Whale Wash, becomes a hero when he tells a great white lie. When his lie begins to unravel, Oscar teams up with an outcast vegetarian shark, Lenny, and his loyal friend Angie (Renée Zellweger) to help him stand up to the most feared shark in the water and find his true place in the reef.

Shark Tale

Join us for a showing of The Little Mermaid and a related craft. Venture under the sea where Ariel, a free-spirited mermaid princess, longs to be part of the human world. After bravely striking a bargain with Ursula, a sneaky sea witch, Ariel embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. With Flounder and Sebastian at her side, Ariel will need all of her courage and determination to make things right in both her worlds.

Little Mermaid

Join us for a showing of Luca and a related craft. Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s original feature film “Luca” is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, Alberto, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret.
