Bookmarks: Diana of the Dunes

book cover

Friday, September 17, 2:00 p.m.

Diana of the Dunes: The True Story of Alice Gray by Janet Edwards will be reviewed by Joan Costello. In the fall of 1915, Alice Gray traded her life in Chicago for a journey in the remote sand hills of northwest Indiana along Lake Michigan. Living in a fisherman's shack, she measured herself against nature rather than society's conventions. Her audacity so bewitched reporters and a curious public that she became the legendary "Diana of the Dunes." Nearly a century later, the story is still a popular folktale, but questions remain. Who was Alice Gray? Why did this Phi Beta Kappa scholar leave Chicago? What happened to her soul mate, Paul Wilson? In this first-ever book about Diana, the mystery of Alice Gray is revealed by those who knew her and through new research. Excerpts from her dunes diary are published here for the first time since 1918. In these pages, rediscover the legend and learn the truth.

Films on DVD Series: Greenberg

Sunday, September 19, 2:00 p.m.

Ben StillerGreenberg brings actor Ben Stiller together with Academy Award-nominated writer/director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) to tell the funny and moving tale of Roger Greenberg. Greenberg is single, fortyish, and at a crossroads in his life. In search of a place to restart his life, he tries to reconnect with old friends. But old friends aren't necessarily still best friends, and Greenberg soon finds himself spending more and more time with his more successful brother's personal assistant, also something of a lost soul. Despite his best attempts not to be drawn in, they manage to forge a connection, and he soon realizes he may at last have found a reason to be happy.

Learning Center Needs Volunteers

The Learning Center needs tutors especially for reading. If you'd like to help someone learn to write and punctuate a sentence, your help is needed. Many people going back to school lack some basic skills. You can help someone help themselves and find personal reward, too. Math, English, and writing tutors are also needed. Call Cyndie McKinney at 219-873-3043 for more information about becoming a volunteer tutor.
